The National Sports Commission (NSC) has called on stakeholders in Nigerian basketball to prioritize the growth of the sport as the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) prepares for its elections later this year.
With the FIBA outlining guidelines for a structured electoral process, the Director General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, emphasized the need for unity and strict adherence to established regulations.
Olopade described the period as a defining moment for basketball in the country, urging all parties involved to place collective interest above personal ambitions. He stressed that the future of Nigeria’s basketball ecosystem, including its athletes, national teams, and international standing depends on cooperation and transparency.
He further encouraged stakeholders to embrace dialogue and follow due process, noting that FIBA’s timeline provides a clear framework for conducting a credible and widely accepted election.
According to FIBA’s directive, the tenure of the current NBBF board has been extended until October 15, 2026, while elections into a new board are expected to hold between September 15 and October 15, 2026, after the conclusion of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.
The NSC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring stability within Nigerian basketball, pledging continued support for a transparent electoral process that aligns with global best practices and safeguards the country’s participation in international competitions.
