Lagos is set for an exciting weekend of tennis as Nigeria hosts Uzbekistan in the Davis Cup World Group II playoffs from February 7 to 8 at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club.
Proceedings will get underway at 11 a.m. on Friday, with Canice Abua opening Nigeria’s campaign against Khumoyun Sultanov in the first singles match. Daniel Adeleye will follow shortly after, facing Abdulaziz Usmonjonov approximately 15 minutes after the curtain-raiser.

The two-day tie will run through Saturday and Sunday, with the host nation parading a formidable five-man squad made up of Adeleye, Abua, Michael Emmanuel, Uchenna Oparaoji, and Yusuf Abubakar.
President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), Rt. Hon. Victor Ochei, expressed strong optimism ahead of the encounter, voicing confidence that the Nigerian side has what it takes to overcome Uzbekistan in the promotion playoffs.
Organized by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the Davis Cup remains the world’s leading international men’s team tennis competition, celebrated for its blend of national pride and competitive intensity. The tournament format traditionally features both singles and doubles matches contested on a home-and-away basis.
Nigeria’s involvement in the Davis Cup dates back several decades within the Africa Zone, offering a vital stage for local players to demonstrate their abilities while gaining global exposure and contributing to the growth of the sport at home.
Staging the playoffs further highlights the National Sports Commission’s ongoing drive to position Nigeria as a preferred destination for major sporting events and to strengthen the country’s profile on the international tennis scene.
