The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has ratified key decisions aimed at strengthening football administration in the country following its Extraordinary General Assembly held on Monday in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
Delegates at the meeting, staged at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall, observed a minute’s silence in honour of late Nigerian football figures including former Technical Director Adegboye Onigbinde and ex-Super Eagles captain Henry Nwosu, alongside other stakeholders who recently passed away.
The Congress expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his administration’s continued financial and moral backing of sports, particularly football. The Assembly also acknowledged the contributions of National Sports Commission leadership, including Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade, in advancing the sector.
Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri was commended for hosting the gathering, with delegates praising the state government’s hospitality and commitment to football development.
In a major outcome of the Assembly, Congress unanimously approved amendments to the NFF Statutes (March 2026 Edition), as well as updates to the Electoral Code and Standing Orders. These changes are expected to shape the governance framework of Nigerian football ahead of future elections.
The Assembly also confirmed the composition of both the NFF Electoral Committee and Electoral Appeals Committee, with representatives drawn from the six geopolitical zones. The committees are scheduled for inauguration in Abuja on March 25, 2026, where members will assume their respective roles in overseeing electoral processes.
Furthermore, global auditing firm Ernst & Young was appointed as the new Independent Auditor of the federation for an initial four-year term, succeeding PricewaterhouseCoopers after its nine-year tenure.
Looking ahead, Congress approved Lafia, Nasarawa State, as the host city for the 2026 NFF Elective Congress, scheduled for September 26.
The Assembly concluded with a unanimous vote of confidence in the NFF Executive Committee, led by President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, endorsing its efforts to develop football across the country.
