Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has addressed the growing criticism from former Nigeria internationals, insisting that the current squad understands the expectations placed on them and can only respond with results on the pitch.

In recent months, the Super Eagles have faced intense scrutiny from former internationals, not just because of their performances at the Africa Cup of Nations, but also after Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and a series of disappointing results in recent competitions. The criticism has focused on issues of consistency, mentality, squad balance and the team’s continued struggle to live up to long-standing expectations.

Speaking at Sunday’s pre-match press conference, Ndidi acknowledged the comments from former players, noting that their views are shaped by experience and a deep understanding of what it means to represent Nigeria.

The only way we can respond is to deliver, Ndidi said. Such statements are there because they’ve seen it, they’ve been there. So maybe they expect more from us and that’s no problem.

The Besiktas midfielder added that the players are fully aware of the responsibility they carry and are working daily to improve, regardless of external noise.

We’ll try our best every day to do more. But the only answer we can give is to deliver and get something out of this tournament, he added.

While acknowledging past disappointments, Ndidi’s comments suggest a calm and focused dressing room determined to turn criticism into motivation. With expectations still high around the national team, the Super Eagles are aiming to show progress and restore confidence through consistent performances and results going forward.

For Ndidi and his teammates, the message is clear, words will not change perception but only delivery will.
