Host nation Morocco opened the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with a disciplined and deserved victory, overcoming a resilient Comoros side with two second half goals in the tournament’s opening match.
Morocco, widely regarded as one of the favourites, were pushed hard by spirited opponents who defended deep and frustrated them for long periods. Despite dominating possession, the Atlas Lions went into the break level after missing an early chance to take control of the game.
Soufiane Rahimi had an opportunity to put Morocco ahead from the penalty spot in the 11th minute, but Comoros goalkeeper Yannick Pandor produced an excellent save to keep his side in the contest.
After sustained pressure, Morocco finally broke the deadlock in the 55th minute. Noussair Mazraoui drove forward down the right and delivered a low cross into the box, where Brahim Diaz found space to strike decisively past Pandor, scoring the first goal of the tournament.
Comoros refused to fold and continued to defend with courage. They nearly found an equaliser when Rafiki Said broke through on goal, but Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou made a crucial save to preserve his team’s lead.
Any remaining doubt was settled late on when substitute Ayoub El Kaabi produced a moment of brilliance. The striker connected with an acrobatic overhead kick inside the area, sealing the victory and sending the home crowd into celebration.
The match was not without concern for Morocco, as centre back Romain Saiss was forced off with an injury in the first half, an issue the technical crew will monitor closely.
The win extended Morocco’s impressive unbeaten run to 19 games in a row and marked a confident start to their home campaign. Comoros, despite defeat, earned credit for their organization and determination against superior opposition.
Morocco will next face Mali as they continue their group stage journey, while Comoros turn their focus to their upcoming clash against Zambia on Friday.
