Nigeria’s U20 women’s national team, the Falconets, secured their place in the final qualifying round of the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup after a 2-1 victory over Senegal in Thies, sealing a 3-1 aggregate win.

Holding a 1-0 advantage from the first leg in Abeokuta, the Falconets entered the return fixture determined to protect their slim lead, while Senegal’s U20 Lionesses aimed to overturn the deficit on home soil in a high stakes encounter.

Nigeria opened the scoring in the 19th minute through another well executed set piece. Favour Chiamaka Nkwocha delivered a corner into the box and Kindness Chinaza Ifeanyi rose highest to head home, replicating her first leg heroics when she also scored from a corner in Abeokuta.

The Falconets continued to press and nearly doubled their advantage four minutes later. A long ball over the top released Folajomi Alabi, who chased it down and fired a left footed effort that was punched away for a corner by Senegal goalkeeper Adjie Ndiaye.

Senegal responded with attacking intent as Marrie Sarr made a strong run down the left in the 29th minute before cutting the ball back to Mariam Fatty, whose low drive went off target. In the 37th minute, Aissatou thought she had equalised from a corner, but the flag was raised for offside.

The decisive second goal for Nigeria arrived in the 69th minute, once again from a corner. Tumininu Adeshina floated a precise cross into the area and Precious Oscar timed her run perfectly to head into the net, extending Nigeria’s aggregate lead and putting the tie firmly in their control.

Senegal pulled one back in the 76th minute through a moment of individual brilliance. Sokhna Nogaye Pene received the ball in midfield with her back to goal, shrugged off her marker and unleashed a powerful strike from nearly 25 yards. The ball struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced into the net beyond a helpless Christiana Uzoma.

Despite the late goal, the Falconets managed the closing stages effectively to secure the victory and confirm their progression.

In the first leg at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta, Nigeria had edged Senegal 1-0 courtesy of Ifeanyi’s 50th minute header from Adeshina’s corner, scored shortly after she came on as a substitute. That result gave head coach Moses Aduku’s side a narrow advantage heading into the second leg.

With the 3-1 aggregate triumph, Nigeria advance to the final round of qualifiers, where they will face Malawi who overcame Guinea Bissau over two legs for a place at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.
