Calvin Bassey has been ruled out of Nigeria’s upcoming international friendlies, dealing an early setback to the Super Eagles as preparations continue in Antalya.
The Fulham defender, who impressed at the last Africa Cup of Nations, will miss the games against Iran and Jordan after suffering a back injury. His absence comes as a blow to head coach Eric Chelle, who had been counting on his defensive stability following a strong showing in Morocco, where he was named in the Team of the Tournament.
Despite the setback, the mood in camp remains focused, with 22 players already in place ahead of the team’s first training session. Captain Wilfred Ndidi has linked up with the squad, providing leadership, while attacking stars Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams have also arrived to strengthen the group.
Regular names such as Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon, Paul Onuachu and Samuel Chukwueze are already in camp, alongside midfield options Frank Onyeka and Raphael Onyedika.
With Bassey unavailable, attention now shifts to the remaining defenders, including Semi Ajayi, Zaidu Sanusi, Bruno Onyemaechi and Igoh Ogbu, who are expected to step up and fill the gap.
Nigeria will open their friendly schedule against Iran on March 27 before facing Jordan on March 31, with both matches set to be played in Turkey following a venue change due to security concerns in the Middle East.
