Coventry City have confirmed the signing of Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka on loan from Premier League side Brentford, with the move marking a significant addition as the Sky Blues push for promotion in the Championship.
The club announced that the agreement includes an obligation to make the transfer permanent should Coventry secure promotion to the Premier League at the end of the season. Onyeka arrives with extensive top-flight and international experience, having spent the past four years at Brentford following his move from Danish side Midtjylland in 2021.
In their official statement, Coventry said: “Coventry City are delighted to announce the signing of midfielder Frank Onyeka on loan from Premier League side Brentford. The deal also includes an obligation to buy should the club achieve promotion to the Premier League. The 28-year-old has plied his trade at the G-Tech Community Stadium since the summer of 2021 and made 75 Premier League appearances for the Bees, 87 in all competitions. He helped establish the West London club in the top flight and played a key role in their ninth-place finish in the 2022-23 season, their highest in the Premier League era.”
The club also highlighted Onyeka’s international pedigree and career background, noting his 41 caps for Nigeria and his involvement at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where the Super Eagles finished third. His formative years in Denmark were also referenced, where he enjoyed major success with Midtjylland, winning two Danish Superliga titles and the Danish Cup, while gaining valuable experience in European competition.
Onyeka, who previously spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Augsburg where he made 31 Bundesliga appearances, expressed his excitement after completing the move. Speaking after his arrival, he said: “I’m very happy to be here. I’m a strong midfielder, I’m a winner and I always want to fight for my teammates. My aim is to give 100 per cent, bring my experience and help the team get promoted to the Premier League and bring glory to the city again. I’m very excited to get going and I’m ready to give my all for Coventry.”
Brentford also confirmed the loan move, explaining the reasoning behind Onyeka’s departure. In a separate statement, the club said: “Frank Onyeka has joined Sky Bet Championship club Coventry City on loan for the remainder of the 2025/26 season. The deal includes an obligation to make the move permanent should the Sky Blues secure promotion to the Premier League this campaign.”
Brentford head coach Keith Andrews added: “He’s someone who has been a big part of our journey although he hasn’t had the minutes or game time that he would have liked. I feel it’s right that he goes on to pastures new because he’s a really good professional and a really good person. I wish him the best and I have no doubt that he will do really well.”
Onyeka leaves Brentford having made 87 appearances across all competitions, contributing to the club’s consolidation in the Premier League and representing Nigeria at multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. He was Brentford’s first signing of the Premier League era and featured regularly during their early seasons in the top flight.
Coventry City currently sit top of the Championship table on 58 points, level with Middlesbrough and five points clear of Hull City in third place. Onyeka’s arrival is seen as a major boost as the club looks to maintain momentum and secure a return to the Premier League.
