Guinean Football Federation have dismissed reports suggesting they lodged an appeal to challenge Morocco national football team victory at the 1976 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), describing the claims as false and without any official backing, Trybal News reports.

The reports gained traction following recent controversy around the Confederation of African Football Appeals Board decision involving the 2025 AFCON, which sparked fresh debates about past tournaments. Some narratives claimed Guinea had demanded the 1976 title be reassigned to them, alleging irregularities during the decisive match against Morocco.

However, the federation moved quickly to shut down the speculation, insisting no such action had been taken.

“In recent days, information circulating on various media, particularly social networks, has falsely suggested that Guinea had taken steps to contest the result of the match between the Syli National and Morocco during this competition,” the statement read.

“The Guinean Football Federation wishes to clarify, in a spirit of responsibility and reconciliation, that this information is inaccurate and has no official basis.”

The federation also revisited the events of the 1976 tournament to provide clarity. In the decisive final round match played on March 14 in Addis Ababa, Guinea took the lead through Chérif Souleymane before Morocco equalised late on through Ahmed Makrouh.

The competition was decided via a round robin format involving four teams, with Morocco, Guinea, Nigeria and Egypt battling for the title. Heading into the final game, Guinea needed a win to lift the trophy, while Morocco required only a draw.

Makrouh’s late goal ensured a 1-1 result, enough to hand Morocco their first AFCON crown.

The FGF’s response brings an end to the speculation, reaffirming that no formal complaint has been filed regarding the outcome of the historic tournament.
