Frank Onyeka made his debut for Coventry City F.C as the Sky Blues secured a 3–1 victory over Middlesbrough F.C. to maintain their lead in the EFL Championship.
Coventry took the lead in the 21st minute when Haji Wright finished calmly after being set up by Jack Rudoni. Wright struck again in the 55th minute to hand the hosts a comfortable two-goal advantage.
Middlesbrough responded in the 67th minute through Riley McGree, who fired home from inside the box to cut the deficit and spark brief hopes of a comeback after Coventry’s dominant spell.
However, the home side quickly restored control as Wright converted from the penalty spot in the 71st minute to complete his hat-trick and seal all three points.
Onyeka, 28, recently joined Coventry on loan from Brentford F.C after limited playing time in the Premier League. The agreement includes a clause that could make the transfer permanent if Coventry achieve promotion at the end of the season.
The Super Eagles midfielder had previously been an unused substitute in Coventry’s goalless draw against Oxford United F.C. while awaiting the birth of his child, but he was handed minutes in this crucial fixture.
Booked in the 27th minute, Onyeka delivered a disciplined performance before being substituted in the 75th minute. He recorded 32 touches, completed eight of his 12 passes, and won seven of his 11 ground duels in an industrious midfield display.
The victory moves Coventry to 62 points, keeping them one point clear at the top of the table ahead of Middlesbrough as the promotion race gathers momentum.
