Emmanuel Fernandez marked a major step in his career as he made his Super Eagles debut in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Iran, with the Rangers defender expressing pride at finally representing his country on the international stage.
The 24-year-old centre-back, born in London to Nigerian parents, was handed his first senior cap in Antalya during the March friendlies, adding fresh depth to Nigeria’s defensive setup.
Emmanuel Fernandez linked up with the squad ahead of the games against Iran and Jordan and quickly settled into the team, capping his call-up with an appearance in the win over Iran. His inclusion comes as part of efforts to strengthen the squad with new options ahead of future competitions.
Speaking before the game, the former Peterborough United defender made it clear that choosing Nigeria was always personal. “It’s my home nation, it’s where my family is from, it’s where I am from,” he said. “It’s something that I have always wanted to happen.”
Fernandez also reflected on the doubts he faced earlier in his career and how belief in himself kept him going. “People probably thought I couldn’t have got there. And I always had faith in myself that I would get there,” Fernandez stated.
The defender added that the moment means a lot to those closest to him, saying, “I know my family are proud. I’m grateful for the opportunity and I can’t wait for it to happen,” he told Rangers TV
Now part of the Super Eagles setup, Fernandez is expected to compete for a regular place in defence, bringing physicality, composure, and strength in the air as Nigeria continues to rebuild and prepare for upcoming challenges.
