Sevilla FC have parted ways with head coach Matías Almeyda following a poor run of results that has left the club struggling in La Liga.

The decision was confirmed on Monday, with Sevilla sitting 15th on the table and just three points above the relegation zone after a series of disappointing performances.

In a brief statement, the club confirmed the departure of the 52 year old, who only took charge last July, and thanked him for his efforts during his short spell in charge.

“Matias Almeyda has been relieved of his duties as Sevilla FC first team head coach.

“Sevilla FC want to thank Matias Almeyda and his team for his efforts and professionalism and wish him the best for the future.”

The development comes as a setback for Nigerian forwards Chidera Ejuke and Akor Adams, who had both featured regularly under Almeyda this season. Ejuke made 23 appearances during his time under the Argentine, while Adams featured 25 times across all competitions.

Almeyda, a former Argentina international, had previously managed clubs including River Plate and AEK Athens before taking the Sevilla job on a three year contract.

With the international break approaching, Sevilla are yet to announce a replacement, leaving uncertainty around the direction of the team as they battle to move away from the relegation zone.
