Egypt recorded a morale boosting victory over fellow Africa Cup of Nations contenders, Super Eagles of Nigeria with a 2-1 win in an international friendly played in Cairo on Tuesday night, just days before the start of the tournament.

The Super Eagles started the game with Stanley Nwabali in goal and a line up that included Bright Osayi Samuel, Zaidu Sanusi, Igho Ogbu, Frank Onyeka, Fisayo Dele Bashiru, Nwadike, Paul Onuachu, Chidozie Awaziem who captained the side, Chidera Ejuke and Akinsanmiro.

Egypt began brightly and were rewarded in the 29th minute when Mahmoud Saber gave the hosts the lead. The ZED striker was left unmarked at the far post and calmly tapped home after a clever assist from Zizo, who caused Nigeria constant problems with his movement and creativity.

Nigeria struggled to find rhythm in attack but nearly benefitted from an Egyptian error when Paul Onuachu’s long ball was almost turned into his own net by defender Yasser Ibrahim, forcing goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy into a sharp save.

That moment lifted the Super Eagles and they drew level soon after. Zaidu Sanusi delivered a free kick from the left which El Shenawy failed to hold at his near post, allowing the ball to slip loose for Chidozie Awaziem to nod in from close range.

Egypt regrouped after the break and quickly regained control of the match. Their pressure paid off when Zizo once again carved open the Nigerian defence, creating space for Mostafa Mohamed to fire a low finish past Nwabali from inside the penalty area.

Nigeria were unable to find a response as Egypt closed out the game comfortably, finishing the encounter on top and with greater attacking cohesion.

Egypt will open their Africa Cup of Nations campaign against Zimbabwe on Monday December 22, 2025, while Nigeria begin their quest for continental glory a day later against Tanzania.
