Bermuda national football team will face several players from top European leagues when they take on DR Congo national football team in an international friendly in Mexico later this month Trybal News reports.
The Congolese squad is expected to feature a number of high profile names including Yoane Wissa of Newcastle United, Aaron Wan-Bissaka from West Ham United, as well as Noah Sadiki and Arthur Masuaku who both play for Sunderland. Axel Tuanzebe, the Burnley central defender and former Manchester United academy graduate, could also be involved.
According to Afrik Foot, the Leopards will take on Bermuda behind closed doors on March 25 in Guadalajara. The friendly comes just days before a crucial match in DR Congo’s campaign for a place at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
DR Congo are currently ranked 48th in the FIFA rankings, while Bermuda sit in 169th position. The friendly will serve as part of DR Congo’s preparations for the inter confederation play off scheduled for March 31. Coach Sébastien Desabre and his team will face the winner of the match between New Caledonia national football team and Jamaica national football team, a group that previously included Bermuda during qualification.
“Facing Bermuda will serve as a dress rehearsal for our team,” a member of the DR Congo coaching staff is quoted as saying on the website.
Bermuda head coach Michael Findlay had earlier revealed that he was seeking two friendly matches during the international window from March 23 to 31 after concluding a domestic training camp last month.
The games are expected to help the coaching staff prepare the squad for the upcoming Nations League campaign which begins in September and also serves as a qualification route to the Gold Cup.
If DR Congo defeat the winner of the play off semi final between Jamaica and New Caledonia on March 31 in Guadalajara, they will qualify for the World Cup for the first time since their appearance at the 1974 tournament.
