Defending champions Côte d’Ivoire began their Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Mozambique in Marrakech, maintaining their unbeaten record against the Mambas in continental competition.

Meeting for the third time at AFCON, the champions were heavy favourites against a Mozambique side still searching for a first-ever tournament win on their fifth appearance. Côte d’Ivoire controlled possession and tempo for much of the contest, with the Mambas relying on their defensive shape to stay in the game.

The Ivorians created a string of chances in the first half. Yan Diomande forced Ernan into an acrobatic save after 25 minutes, before Amad Diallo flashed a powerful effort over the bar shortly afterward. Wilfried Konan then went inches wide from close range following another incisive move as the pressure intensified. Just before half-time, Franck Kessie saw a header comfortably saved after Ernan failed to claim a cross.

The breakthrough finally came in the 49th minute. Mozambique switched off defensively as a cross from the right found Kessie, whose cushioned header dropped perfectly for Amad Diallo. The forward drilled his finish through the legs of Reinildo to calm Ivorian nerves and give the holders a deserved lead.

Côte d’Ivoire continued to create openings, with Kessie and Sangare both going close to extending the advantage. Mozambique eventually showed more attacking intent, pushing forward in the closing stages. Their best opportunity arrived deep into stoppage time when Geny Catamo wriggled clear inside the box, only to fire straight at Yahia Fofana.

Despite a late scare, the champions held firm to secure all three points and begin their title defence in winning fashion.

Côte d’Ivoire had previously beaten Mozambique at AFCON in 1986 and 1996, and they extended their unbeaten head-to-head record to eight matches. The Elephants have also enjoyed a flawless World Cup qualifying campaign under Emerse Faé, winning every game without conceding.

They continue Group F action against Cameroon on December 28, while Mozambique will look to respond when they face Gabon.
