Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey delivered an outstanding performance to earn the man of the match award as Nottingham Forest and Fulham played out a goalless draw in Matchday 30 of the Premier League at the City Ground.

The contest produced few clear scoring chances, with both teams struggling to find a breakthrough despite several promising moments throughout the match.

Forest made the brighter start and nearly took the lead within the opening 10 minutes. Elliot Anderson drove into the penalty area and created space for a shot after cutting the ball onto his preferred foot, but his effort drifted wide of the post.

Fulham gradually settled into the game and almost opened the scoring through Calvin Bassey. The Nigerian defender rose highest to meet a well delivered free kick but directed his header straight at goalkeeper Matz Sels, missing a good opportunity to put the visitors ahead.

Forest attempted to threaten from long range as the first half progressed. Morgan Gibbs White and Nico Dominguez both tried their luck from outside the box, but Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno handled the efforts comfortably.

The second half briefly sparked into life when substitute Dan Ndoye appeared to win a penalty for Forest after being brought down inside the area. Referee Sam Barrott initially pointed to the spot, but the assistant referee raised his flag for offside, ruling out the decision before the penalty could be taken.

Forest came closest to scoring in the 57th minute when Ola Aina surged forward from right back and found himself in an advanced position. After receiving a pass from Murillo, the Nigerian defender unleashed a powerful strike from around 20 yards that crashed against the crossbar before bouncing clear.

The home side thought they had finally broken the deadlock in the 63rd minute when Ndoye was played through by Neco Williams and calmly slotted the ball past Leno. However, a VAR review confirmed that Ndoye had been marginally offside, leading to the goal being disallowed.

Fulham nearly punished Forest immediately afterwards. Rodrigo Munoz saw his effort blocked by Aina inside the penalty area and from the resulting corner Sasa Lukic sent a shot narrowly wide of the target.

Forest created their final opportunity in the closing minutes when Anderson played a pass through to Taiwo Awoniyi in the 88th minute. The Nigerian striker managed to create space for a shot but dragged his effort wide of the post.

Calvin Bassey was one of the standout performers on the pitch, producing a commanding defensive display across the entire 90 minutes. The Nigerian centre back won all of his ground duels, made six recoveries, recorded 76 touches and completed 56 of his 63 passes to help Fulham keep a clean sheet.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Bassey reflected on his missed opportunity and the overall performance of his team.

“It was a big chance. I wasn’t sure if I was on or off. I timed it well, but hit it straight at the GK It’s got to be a goal. The conditions for both teams with the pitch & the wind made it a difficult game. We tried to manage the situations as best we could.”

On his side keeping a clean sheet he added:

“We kept a great line. There was a bit of luck as well. That’s what VAR is for.”

He also spoke about Fulham’s ambitions for a possible European finish this season.

“I don’t think it’s ruled out. We take each game as it comes, anything can happen. I haven’t looked at the table. Hopefully, things work in our favour as well.”

The result leaves Nottingham Forest in 17th place with 29 points as they continue to battle against relegation, while Fulham sit in 11th position with 41 points in the Premier League standings.
