CAF Set to Decide Fate of WAFCON 2026 Amid Postponement Fears

The Confederation of African Football is expected to release an official statement within the next 48 hours regarding the future of the 2026 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations(WAFCON 2026) Trybal News Reports.

The tournament’s status has been under review for weeks following urgent high level meetings involving top sports administrators. Speculation about a possible postponement has continued to grow, creating uncertainty among fans, players and stakeholders across the continent.

CAF Head of TV and Communications, Lux September, addressed the situation on social media and confirmed that a decision is close. He explained that the delay in communication was due to the complexity of the discussions taking place behind closed doors.

“CAF will communicate within the next 48 hours on the situation regarding the TotalEnergiesWAFCON26,” September stated. “There has been several discussions for weeks. The matter is receiving Urgent and high level attention.”

Morocco remains the confirmed host for the 2026 tournament, but reports of logistical challenges and scheduling concerns have raised questions about whether the competition will proceed as originally planned.

The uncertainty has led to reports that the South African Football Association is ready to step in if required. South Africa is widely regarded as capable of hosting major tournaments at short notice, having previously staged the 2010 FIFA World Cup and several continental competitions.

The Women’s Africa Cup of Nations has grown significantly in recent years, with the 2022 and 2024 editions attracting record commercial interest and global audiences. Any postponement or change of host nation could have major implications for scheduling, sponsorship agreements and team preparations.
