Clubs emerging victorious in the CAF Confederation Cup will now have a clearer route to the global spotlight after FIFA confirmed an expansion of the FIFA Club World Cup to 48 teams.

The new structure, which will come into effect from the 2029 edition, increases the number of participating clubs from 36 to 48, opening the door for broader continental representation. The move signals a major shift in the organisation of the global club showpiece, with more champions and high-performing sides expected to benefit.

Under the revised format, Africa is projected to receive seven slots. These positions are anticipated to go to winners of the continent’s elite competitions, including the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup, as well as other clubs selected based on performance rankings and qualification criteria set by FIFA in collaboration with CAF.

The expansion is part of FIFA’s broader strategy to widen global participation, enhance competitiveness, and drive greater commercial value for the tournament. For African clubs, it adds extra incentive to chase continental glory, knowing that success could now translate into a place on football’s biggest club stage.
