Burkina Faso and Wydad AC midfielder Stephane Aziz Ki has suffered the heartbreaking loss of his son while on national team duty at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The tragic news was shared by respected African football journalist Micky Jnr on X, who posted the following message:
“🕊️ Condolences 🕊️
Wydad Athletic Club star Aziz Ki has sadly lost his son.
A heartbreaking moment for him and his family.
I extend my sincere condolences to Aziz Ki, his loved ones and everyone affected by this tragic loss.
May they find strength, comfort and peace during this very difficult time.”
Aziz Ki has been part of the Burkina Faso squad throughout the tournament. He made his first appearance as a substitute in the 2-1 victory over Equatorial Guinea on December 24, 2025, and was an unused substitute in the 1-0 defeat to Algeria four days later. He then started in Burkina Faso’s final group match against Sudan, playing 74 minutes and providing the assist for Lassina Traore’s opener in their 2-0 win on December 31.
The devastating news has cast a shadow over the Stallions’ preparations for the knockout stages. It is currently unclear whether Aziz Ki will take part in Burkina Faso’s round of 16 clash against Côte d’Ivoire as he processes the loss with his family.
The football community has rallied around the midfielder, offering condolences and support during this extremely difficult time.
