The RFEF Competition Committee has issued a severe seven-game suspension to Sevilla head coach Matias Almeyda following a volatile La Liga encounter with Alaves.

This disciplinary action directly affects the next couple of weeks for Super Eagles forwards Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke, who will now be without their manager on the touchline for half of the remaining league fixtures. The Argentine tactician was dismissed during the match for vehement protests against referee Galech Apezteguia, but the sanctions were heavily increased due to his refusal to leave the pitch and his subsequent aggressive behavior toward the officiating crew at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.

The extensive ban is the result of multiple infractions documented in the official match report. Almeyda received three matches for “contempt” based on gestures and words directed at the officials after his dismissal, two matches for the initial protests that led to his red card, and one match for “conduct contrary to good sporting order” after he kicked a water bottle and confronted the assistant referees. An additional match was added because the coach failed to retreat to the dressing room, instead lingering in the tunnel and delaying the resumption of the game for over a minute.

Sevilla has reacted strongly to the ruling, arguing that the video evidence contradicts the referee’s version of events and that the punishment does not fit the crime. The club’s legal department is currently preparing an appeal to the Appeals Committee, asserting their right to defend their manager against what they perceive as an unfair description of the facts. The Andalusian side is prepared to escalate the matter to higher sporting legal authorities to ensure their coaching staff is not sidelined for such a critical portion of the season.

The club officially voiced their disapproval of the committee’s decision while acknowledging the manager’s passionate reaction during the heat of the game. A statement from Sevilla read: “The club, after learning of the seven-game ban four our head coach from the Disciplinary Committee following his red card last weekend against Alavés, wish to state the following. Our total support to our head coach against a punishment we consider excessive. We share the regret and the apologies expressed by the coach himself after the match regarding his own reaction. That the club’s legal department will exhaust all available avenues to appeal what it considers an excessive sanction, both in terms of the number of matches imposed and the way the facts have been described. We respect the sporting legal authorities and their decisions, but will make use of all available tools to defend our legitimate rights and those of our coach.”

This ruling stands as one of the most significant disciplinary measures in Spanish football history, drawing comparisons to Diego Simeone’s eight-match ban during the 2014-15 season. In that instance, the Atletico Madrid manager was heavily sanctioned for a physical altercation with a fourth official during a Spanish Super Cup match. While Almeyda’s case does not involve physical contact of that nature, the duration of his stay on the field and his continued defiance of the match officials were deemed grave enough by the committee to warrant a similarly historic penalty.

For Super Eagles forwards Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke, this coaching absence comes at a precarious time for the club. Sevilla currently occupies 13th place in the La Liga standings, having secured seven wins and five draws against twelve defeats this season. With 31 goals scored and 39 conceded, the team is in desperate need of stability to climb the table. The absence of their primary tactician from the dugout for the next seven matchdays creates an additional hurdle for the Nigerian duo as they look to find consistency in the final third.

The immediate focus for the Sevilla hierarchy is now divided between preparing for their next fixture without Almeyda and fighting the legal battle to reduce his suspension. Should the appeal fail, the assistant coaching staff will be tasked with leading the team through a difficult stretch of the campaign. The outcome of this appeal will be vital for the club’s season trajectory, as they look to avoid being dragged further down the table during their manager’s enforced absence from the sidelines.
