Former two-time world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has issued his first public update after being injured in a fatal car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close friends and team members.
Joshua has since returned to the UK ahead of the funerals of Sina Ghami, his strength and conditioning coach, and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, another key member of his training team. Both men died when their vehicle collided with a stationary truck on a major road near Lagos on Monday 28th December 2025.
Joshua suffered injuries and was pulled from the vehicle in severe pain before receiving hospital treatment. He was later discharged on Wednesday.
On Sunday, he posted two images on Instagram with the caption: “My Brothers Keeper.” In one of the images, Anthony Joshua is seen seated with his mother and three other women, one of whom is holding a photograph of Ghami.
On Friday, police in Ogun State confirmed that Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, the driver of the vehicle in which Joshua was travelling, had been charged at Sagamu Magistrate Court in connection with the crash. Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps initially said speeding and a failed overtaking attempt caused the collision, while the Ogun State police commissioner later stated that a burst tyre led to the driver losing control and swerving into the stationary truck.
Joshua, who was born in Watford to Nigerian parents, had been holidaying in Nigeria following his sixth-round knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami on December 19. He had been expected to fight again in February, likely in Saudi Arabia, with long-term plans including a potential bout against Tyson Fury in 2026.
Fury reacted to the tragedy on Instagram, posting: “This is so sad. May god give them a good bed in heaven,” while also sending his thoughts and prayers to Joshua and the families of the victims.
