Akor Adams kept up his fine scoring run on Saturday as Sevilla edged Athletic Club 2-1 in LaLiga, with the Nigerian forward converting a second half penalty to seal the win. It was his third goal in as many league games, further underlining his growing influence since returning from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Sevilla started brightly and nearly took an early lead in the sixth minute when Adams fired a right footed shot from the centre of the box, but Athletic goalkeeper Unai Simón saved comfortably after a headed assist from Lucien Agoumé.

Despite Sevilla’s positive start, it was Athletic Club who struck first in the 40th minute. Robert Navarro finished from close range, steering a right footed shot into the top right corner from the right side of the six yard box to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

The hosts responded almost immediately. Two minutes later, Peque Fernández found the equaliser with a right footed finish from the centre of the area, directing Juanlu Sánchez’s cross into the bottom left corner to make it 1-1 before the break.

Sevilla took control of the contest in the second half, and their pressure paid off in the 56th minute. After a VAR review, a penalty was awarded for a handball by Yuri Berchiche. Adams stepped up and calmly rolled his right footed effort into the bottom left corner, putting Sevilla 2-1 ahead.

The striker remained a constant threat and went close again in the 84th minute, but his shot from outside the box was saved low by Simón after an assist from Kike Salas.

Akor Adams played the full 90 minutes and delivered a strong all round performance. He recorded three shots on target, missed one big chance, completed seven of his 12 passes, had 29 touches and won three of seven aerial duels.

The victory came at an important time for Sevilla, who had been struggling near the bottom of the table. Before this match, they were just two points above the relegation zone and had collected only one point from their previous four games after defeats to Real Madrid, Levante and Celta Vigo, followed by a 2-2 draw with Elche.

The win also helped improve Sevilla’s poor home form. They had the third worst home record in LaLiga before kick off, with only 10 points from 10 matches, while Athletic Club had also found life difficult away from home, picking up just eight points from 10 games.

For Akor Adams, the goal took his LaLiga tally to six for the season, to go with two assists. He now has eight goal involvements in 16 league appearances, continuing to grow in importance as Sevilla look to pull clear of danger and build momentum in the weeks ahead.
