Nigeria head coach Éric Chelle has urged calm and total focus ahead of the Super Eagles’ Round of 16 clash against Mozambique at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, stressing that his team is only thinking about the next challenge.
Nigeria will face Mozambique on Monday, January 5, 2026, in Fès, as they chase a place in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
Speaking ahead of the encounter, Chelle admitted that pressure has followed him since taking the job but insisted ambition must be matched with discipline and focus.
Since I took the job, I have been under pressure. Game after game we want to be ambitious, but for now, it’s Mozambique, Chelle said.
The Franco-Malian tactician made it clear that past performances count for little, adding that the team’s attention is on daily improvement, training intensity and group mentality.
I don’t talk about what happened before. We are focused on what happens day after day, our training sessions, the life of the group and the players’ behaviour. We have a plan together,” he added.
Chelle confirmed a major setback for Nigeria with Cyriel Dessers ruled out for 10–12 weeks due to injury. While expressing disappointment, the coach challenged his players to respond positively.
I am disappointed for him, but we have to look forward and play a great game for Cyriel.”
Midfielder Ryan is also unavailable for the Mozambique tie, although he is expected to return in the coming days after resuming light running.
Nigeria have shown flashes of attacking quality at the tournament but Chelle admitted there is room for improvement, particularly in ball retention and concentration during matches.
Nigeria vs Mozambique: Head-to-Head
The Super Eagles have a strong historical record against Mozambique. Both sides have met five times at senior level, with Nigeria winning four matches and drawing one, remaining unbeaten in the fixture.
Their most notable AFCON meeting came in 2010, when Nigeria secured a 3–0 victory in the group stage.
As the knockout phase begins, Nigeria will be hoping their experience and pedigree count, while Mozambique aim to spring a surprise. For Chelle and his players, however, the message is clear, full focus on Mozambique, one game at a time.
