New signing Ademola Lookman was unable to inspire Atlético Madrid on his LaLiga debut as Diego Simeone’s side suffered a surprise 1-0 home defeat to Real Betis at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

The loss came just three days after Atlético had thrashed the same opponents 5-0 away from home in the Copa del Rey, but this time Betis responded with a disciplined and determined display to claim revenge. Antony’s first half goal proved decisive, condemning Atlético to a setback that leaves them third in the table and 13 points adrift of leaders Barcelona, who defeated Mallorca on Saturday.

Betis made a bright start and were rewarded in the opening half when Antony struck to silence the home crowd. The visitors, who had been heavily criticised after their cup humiliation, looked far more compact and organised, with head coach Manuel Pellegrini making five changes to his starting line up and demanding a reaction from his players.

Atlético attempted to respond but found chances hard to come by. Jan Oblak was forced into an early save to deny Cédric Bakambu, while at the other end Julián Álvarez, still struggling for form, was kept quiet by Betis goalkeeper Álvaro Valles. The hosts enjoyed spells of possession but lacked the cutting edge to break down a resilient Betis defence.

Ademola Lookman, making his first ever appearance in LaLiga following his arrival, showed flashes of promise without being able to change the course of the game. The Nigerian forward played 70 minutes before being replaced by Obed Vargas, registering two shots, completing 19 of 21 passes, recording 33 touches and completing one successful dribble.

Atlético pushed late on in search of an equaliser but Betis held firm to secure a historic result. It was the first time Betis have won at Atlético’s new stadium and only the second victory for Manuel Pellegrini over Diego Simeone in his managerial career.

The defeat dents Atlético’s title ambitions, while the victory strengthens Betis’ push for a top four finish as they continue to close the gap on fourth placed Villarreal, despite having played two more matches.
