Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman is set to make a crucial decision on his future after Atletico Madrid reached an agreement with Atalanta for his transfer in a dramatic late twist to the winter window.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Lookman’s future “will be decided soon,” with both Atletico Madrid and Fenerbahce tabling strong offers for the Nigerian international. While the Spanish side have now agreed a €40 million fee with Atalanta including payment terms, the move is still pending the player’s final approval.

Fenerbahce had been close to securing Lookman’s signature after agreeing on a total package that would have seen him earn around €8.5 million net per season plus add-ons. Their €35m plus €5m proposal is still on the table, but final approval from the player is awaited, leaving the Turkish club hopeful of completing the deal.

Sensing an opportunity, Atletico Madrid moved decisively to match the €40m proposal and have since improved their salary offer, opening negotiations with Lookman’s representatives in a bid to hijack the transfer. Atalanta are prepared to sanction the winger’s departure now that their valuation has been met. Notably, Lookman, who was named the 2024 African Player of the Year, now faces one of the most important decisions of his career as he weighs his options carefully.

Despite the breakthrough between both clubs, Lookman is yet to give the green light as he evaluates Atletico’s proposal alongside Fenerbahce’s offer. With the transfer deadline fast approaching, Diego Simeone’s side are pushing to convince the Nigerian star to choose the Metropolitano.

The clock is now ticking, and the final call rests with Lookman as he decides the next chapter of his career after a dramatic turn of events in the closing hours of the window.
