Jessica Oji announced herself on the international stage in style on Wednesday, claiming a silver medal for Team Nigeria in the women’s shot put at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, Trybal News reports.

Making her Commonwealth Games debut, the 19-year-old produced a best throw of 17.87 metres to finish second in a highly competitive final. Although she recorded the same distance as Jamaica’s Lloydricia Cameron, Oji secured the silver medal on countback, while Canada’s Sarah Mitton dominated the event with a winning throw of 19.88m.
The result marks another significant milestone in Oji’s rapid rise since committing her international future to Nigeria earlier this year.
Born and raised in the United States, the University of Pennsylvania athlete has enjoyed a breakthrough season, rewriting the Nigerian shot put record and establishing herself as one of the country’s most exciting young field athletes. Her performances on the American collegiate circuit hinted at her enormous potential, and she has now translated that form onto one of the biggest stages in Commonwealth sport.
Despite competing against a field featuring established international throwers, Oji displayed maturity and composure beyond her age to deliver when it mattered most, earning Team Nigeria another valuable medal in Glasgow.
Her silver medal increased Nigeria’s overall haul at the Games to 14 medals, seven gold, five silver and two bronze, as the country continues to enjoy one of its most successful Commonwealth Games campaigns in recent history.
For Team Nigeria, Oji’s performance represents more than another podium finish. It signals the emergence of a new generation of athletes capable of competing with the world’s best. At just 19 years old, she has already established herself as one of the nation’s brightest prospects, and her impressive debut suggests even greater achievements could lie ahead on the global stage.
