Folarin Balogun scored the opening goal before being sent off as the USA defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in Santa Clara to book their place in the last 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite playing the final half hour with 10 men, the co-hosts controlled the match and secured only the second World Cup knockout victory in the nation’s history.

The United States made sweeping changes to the team that featured in their previous match. Weston McKennie was the only player to keep his place after several key players were rested once qualification from the group had already been secured. The fresh lineup looked determined to continue the attacking style that had impressed throughout the tournament.

Bosnia and Herzegovina also reshuffled their side after beating Qatar 3-1. They made four changes and switched to a back-three system that often became a five-man defence when under pressure. Up front, Edin Dzeko partnered Ermedin Demirovic once again as they searched for another upset.

Bosnia and Herzegovina created the first real opportunity after 10 minutes. Dzeko held up a long ball brilliantly before laying it off to Demirovic, whose effort forced Matt Freese into an important save. The resulting corner curled directly toward goal, but Freese reacted quickly to push it away before it crossed the line.

The USA responded in the 18th minute. McKennie found space down the right flank and delivered a dangerous ball into the area. Goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj punched the cross against Antonee Robinson, with the ball looping just over the crossbar. It was a huge opportunity for the Americans to break the deadlock.

Balogun thought he had given the hosts the lead after 31 minutes. McKennie slipped a perfectly weighted pass into the striker, who controlled well before drilling a low finish into the bottom corner. However, the assistant referee immediately raised the flag for offside, and the goal was correctly ruled out.

The breakthrough finally arrived just before half-time. Tillman’s attempted pass toward Balogun took fortunate deflections off two Bosnia and Herzegovina defenders before falling kindly into the striker’s path. Balogun kept his composure in a one-on-one situation and calmly slotted past Vasilj to hand the USA a deserved 1-0 lead.

The Americans nearly doubled their advantage deep into first-half stoppage time. Tyler Adams clipped a delightful pass to Sergino Dest, who squared the ball perfectly for Balogun. The striker struck first time, but his effort clipped the top of the crossbar and flew over.

At the break, Bosnia and Herzegovina faced an uphill task. Apart from Demirovic’s early effort, they created very little going forward. Meanwhile, the United States enjoyed most of the possession but knew they needed greater cutting edge despite holding the advantage.

The match changed dramatically just after the hour mark. Muharemovic went down in pain after Balogun landed awkwardly on his ankle during a challenge. Following a lengthy VAR review, the referee examined the incident on the pitchside monitor before upgrading the yellow card to a straight red. Officials ruled that Balogun’s challenge amounted to serious foul play, leaving the USA to play the remainder of the contest with 10 men.

Even with a numerical disadvantage, the Americans continued to threaten. Christian Pulisic thought he had scored in the 78th minute after a slick passing move involving McKennie and Tillman. However, the AC Milan forward had drifted into an offside position before finishing, and the goal was ruled out.

The second goal finally arrived in the 82nd minute. Tillman stepped up to take a free kick from just outside the penalty area and curled a superb effort over the wall. Vasilj managed to get a hand to the ball but could not prevent it from finding the back of the net, giving the United States a commanding 2-0 lead.

Bosnia and Herzegovina pushed forward in stoppage time but struggled to trouble the American defence. Mahmic came closest with two long-range efforts that narrowly missed the target, although Freese remained alert throughout the closing minutes.

The final whistle confirmed a thoroughly deserved victory for the USA after an impressive all-round display. Balogun opened the scoring after seeing an earlier effort ruled out before his afternoon ended with a red card. Nevertheless, the Americans showed resilience with 10 men, while Bosnia and Herzegovina failed to take advantage despite their extra player.

Tillman’s excellent free kick sealed the result as the United States advanced confidently into the round of 16, where they will face Belgium with growing belief after another disciplined and convincing World Cup performance.
