Brazil secured top spot in Group C with a convincing 3-0 victory over Scotland in their final 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage match at Miami Stadium on Wednesday.

Vinicius Junior scored twice for the Selecao, while Matheus Cunha added a third in a dominant display that was made even more memorable by Neymar’s emotional return after a 980-day absence from international action.

The build-up to the match focused heavily on Neymar, who was named in Brazil’s matchday squad for the first time since suffering a serious injury against Uruguay in October 2023. The forward started on the bench, but his eventual return provided one of the biggest moments of the night.

Brazil needed only seven minutes to take control. Scotland gifted the South Americans an early breakthrough when Scott McKenna lingered on the ball deep inside his own half. Rayan pounced on the mistake, stole possession and fed Vinicius Junior, who calmly rounded goalkeeper Angus Gunn before rolling the ball into an empty net.

The early setback left Scotland chasing the game against a Brazilian side full of confidence and attacking quality. Brazil thought they had doubled their lead in the 22nd minute when Vinicius dispossessed Jack Hendry and slotted home. However, after a VAR review, referee Cesar Ramos ruled the goal out for a foul by the Real Madrid star in the build-up.

Scotland’s task became even harder as history offered little encouragement. The Scots had failed to win any of their previous seven World Cup matches after conceding first since beating the Netherlands in 1978.

Brazil continued to dominate possession and eventually found a second goal deep into first-half stoppage time. Scotland again struggled to play out from the back as Andrew Robertson’s misplaced pass was intercepted. Bruno Guimaraes quickly lifted a precise cross to the back post, where Vinicius arrived unmarked to head home his second goal of the night and his fourth of the tournament.

The strike moved Vinicius onto five World Cup goals for Brazil, matching the tallies of legendary names Romario, Zico and Garrincha.

Brazil nearly produced another spectacular moment moments later. Lucas Paqueta floated a delightful pass over the Scotland defence for Rayan, who controlled brilliantly before attempting to find the bottom corner. Gunn reacted sharply and got the slightest touch to push the effort wide.

Scotland finally tested Alisson shortly after the restart. Kieran Tierney delivered an inviting cross from the left and Scott McTominay rose highest inside the penalty area. The Napoli midfielder made strong contact with his header, but Alisson gathered comfortably.

Vinicius then came within inches of completing his hat-trick in the 51st minute. The winger burst through the middle of the Scotland defence with electric pace but could not get enough power on his finish before Gunn rushed out to smother the danger. No Brazilian player has scored a World Cup hat-trick since Pele, and Vinicius looked determined to end that wait.

Brazil effectively sealed victory on the hour mark with a move that showcased their attacking brilliance. Casemiro threaded a perfectly weighted pass through the lines to Guimaraes, who surged forward before selflessly squaring the ball for Matheus Cunha. The striker had the easiest of finishes as he guided the ball past Gunn to make it 3-0.

Scotland attempted to respond and finally showed more attacking intent. Ferguson forced Alisson into a save from a free-kick before McTominay saw another header denied from the resulting corner. However, Brazil remained firmly in control.

The biggest cheer of the night arrived in the 76th minute. Neymar replaced Cunha and stepped onto the pitch in Brazil’s famous yellow shirt for the first time since October 2023. The emotional reception from fans and teammates highlighted the significance of his long-awaited comeback.

Three minutes later, Vinicius almost completed his hat-trick. He cut inside from the left and cleverly aimed for the near post instead of the far corner. Gunn stayed alert and produced another excellent save to keep the scoreline respectable.

Scotland continued to battle until the final whistle. Deep into stoppage time, Anthony Ralston kept the ball alive and found McTominay in space, but Alisson once again came to Brazil’s rescue with a crucial save.

When the final whistle arrived, Brazil celebrated a commanding victory that secured first place in Group C. Vinicius Junior delivered a match-winning performance with two goals, while Cunha’s strike completed the scoring. Neymar’s return added an emotional touch to an already memorable evening for the five-time world champions.

The result also extended Brazil’s strong record against Scotland at the World Cup. After a goalless draw in 1974, Brazil have now won four consecutive World Cup meetings against the Scots, following victories in 1982, 1990, 1998 and now 2026. Only Argentina and the Netherlands have faced each other more often at the tournament since 1974.
