Amad Diallo scored a dramatic late winner as Côte d’Ivoire edged Ecuador 1-0 in their opening Group E match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Philadelphia Stadium on Sunday.

The victory marked a dream start for the Ivorians, who extended their winning streak to four matches and ended Ecuador’s impressive 19-game unbeaten run. It was also Côte d’Ivoire’s first World Cup appearance in 12 years, and they marked the occasion with a hard-fought victory.

Ecuador started brightly and nearly took the lead inside three minutes when Moises Caicedo fired wide from outside the box. The South Americans continued to press and created an even better opportunity in the 11th minute. A defensive slip gifted Enner Valencia a clear sight of goal inside the area, but the veteran striker blazed over the bar.

A minute later, Ecuador threatened again as John Yeboah cut in from the right and sent a powerful effort narrowly over the crossbar. Their dominance continued in the 24th minute when Yeboah struck the woodwork after capitalising on a defensive mix-up and unleashing a fierce shot from the edge of the area.

Ecuador came even closer six minutes later. Pedro Vite produced a sublime through ball that split the defence, but Alan Minda’s effort crashed against the crossbar. The South Americans became the first team since Costa Rica in 2018 to hit the woodwork at least twice in the first half of a World Cup match.

Despite Ecuador’s strong start, Côte d’Ivoire gradually grew into the contest. In the 18th minute, Bazoumana Toure nearly punished Ecuador on the counterattack, but goalkeeper Hernan Galindez made an excellent save to push the effort around the post.

The Ivorians then came within inches of breaking the deadlock in the 35th minute. Yan Diomande delivered a dangerous cut-back for Nicolas Pepe, whose close-range effort looked destined for the net before Alan Franco produced a remarkable block to deny a certain goal.

The teams went into the break level, although Ecuador arguably felt unlucky not to be ahead after striking the woodwork twice and creating several clear openings.

Côte d’Ivoire emerged with greater intent after halftime. In the 52nd minute, Elye Wahi added his name to the growing list of players denied by the frame of the goal when his flicked header from Diomande’s cross rattled the same crossbar Ecuador had struck twice earlier.

Moments later, the lively Diomande dazzled with a brilliant run through several defenders before firing over from inside the area. The winger continued to trouble Ecuador’s backline with his pace and direct running.

Ecuador remained dangerous and nearly found a breakthrough in the 69th minute when Gonzalo Plata unleashed a powerful strike from distance, but Yahia Fofana produced a fine save to keep the scores level.

As the match appeared destined for a draw, Côte d’Ivoire delivered the decisive moment in the 90th minute. Sustained pressure and relentless running finally paid off when Amad Diallo collected the ball in a promising position and showed remarkable composure. The Manchester United forward opened up his body before guiding a precise left-footed finish into the side netting beyond Galindez.

The goal sparked wild celebrations among the Ivorian players and supporters. Ecuador pushed forward in stoppage time and won a late corner, but Côte d’Ivoire stood firm before the final whistle confirmed a famous victory.

The result ended Ecuador’s 19-match unbeaten streak and gave Emerse Fae’s side a crucial three points ahead of a daunting clash with Group E favourites Germany.

Before this match, Côte d’Ivoire had lost all three of their previous World Cup meetings against South American opposition, falling to Argentina in 2006, Brazil in 2010 and Colombia in 2014. Ecuador’s only previous World Cup encounter against an African nation had also ended in defeat, a 2-1 loss to Senegal in 2022.

Côte d’Ivoire qualified for the 2026 World Cup after winning eight of their 10 qualifying matches. They were one of only two African teams to complete qualifying without conceding a goal, alongside Tunisia. The Elephants also arrived in the tournament full of confidence after beating France 2-1 in their final warm-up match.

Thanks to Diallo’s late heroics, Côte d’Ivoire now head into their showdown with Germany full of belief, while Ecuador must quickly regroup after seeing their long unbeaten run come to an end in heartbreaking fashion.
