United States head coach Mauricio Pochettino praised his team’s collective performance after their impressive 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the result was built on teamwork rather than individual brilliance.
The co-hosts delivered one of the standout performances of the tournament so far on an electric night at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Folarin Balogun scored twice, Giovanni Reyna added a spectacular late goal, and an early own goal helped the United States secure a commanding win that placed them in a strong position in Group D.
Despite Balogun’s brace and several standout individual displays, Pochettino refused to focus on any one player when speaking after the match.
“It’s not only to talk about some names, it’s about the collective,” said Pochettino.
“It’s not only Balo or different players that performed. I think the team was amazing. Not only the starting 11 but all the players around and on the bench.”
The former Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea manager remained consistent in his message throughout his post match press conference. When reporters asked him specifically about captain Christian Pulisic, Pochettino once again highlighted the contribution of the entire squad.
“You push me to talk about names, and it’s about the team, it’s a collective performance. Of course, he was amazing,” said the coach.
Pochettino then went on to praise almost every member of the United States lineup, repeatedly describing their performances as “amazing” and emphasizing the importance of unity within the squad.
The coach also reserved special praise for the supporters who packed the stadium and created a memorable atmosphere throughout the contest.
More than 70,000 fans filled the Los Angeles venue and generated a vibrant environment as the United States produced an attacking masterclass against Paraguay. The atmosphere contradicted suggestions in some sections of the media that American interest in the World Cup might be overshadowed by other major sporting events, including the ongoing NBA Finals.
Instead, the crowd played a major role in inspiring the hosts to a dream start on home soil.
“On behalf of the whole team, massive thank you to the fans, because the energy that they relate to the team was amazing, and we can do amazing things with if the fans are in this way,” said Pochettino.
The victory leaves the United States well placed to advance from Group D, which also includes Australia and Türkiye. The Americans will face Australia in their next match as they look to take another major step toward the knockout stages.
While pleased with the result, Pochettino stressed that his players must remain focused and avoid getting carried away by their opening success.
“We are so happy, but this is only the start,” said Pochettino.
“It’s still two games to play. We need to enjoy this start to the tournament, but know that we need to keep going and try to improve and try to do better in the next game, because all the games are very competitive.”
The emphatic win over Paraguay has given the United States momentum and confidence heading into the remainder of the group stage. However, Pochettino’s message was clear. The performance may have been impressive, but the journey is only beginning.
For now, the United States can celebrate a near perfect start to their home World Cup campaign, with their coach convinced that the team’s greatest strength lies not in individual stars but in the collective effort that delivered a memorable opening night in Los Angeles.
