Edo Queens strengthened their grip on top spot in the NWFL Premiership Super Six after a hard fought 2-1 victory over Rivers Angels on Matchday 4, while defending champions Bayelsa Queens returned to winning ways to keep their title hopes alive.
The crucial round of fixtures ensured that the race for the 2025/2026 NWFL Premiership title will go down to the final day, with three teams still in contention for the championship.
At the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, Edo Queens continued their impressive run with a third consecutive victory in the Super Six competition. The South South derby produced plenty of drama as both sides battled for valuable points.
Edo Queens broke the deadlock in the 39th minute through Precious Oscar. The forward once again made a significant impact after coming off the bench, scoring her third goal of the tournament and giving her side a deserved lead before halftime.
Rivers Angels responded positively after the break and eventually found their equaliser in the 72nd minute. Substitute Abasiofon Uwah finished clinically to level the score at 1-1 and register her 12th league goal of the season. The strike moved her within one goal of Atume Doosuur in the race for the league’s Golden Boot award.
However, Edo Queens quickly regained control of the contest. Just five minutes after conceding, Chioma Moses restored their advantage with a decisive finish in the 77th minute. Her winning goal sealed a 2-1 victory and further highlighted her remarkable form.
Moses has now scored seven goals in just four Super Six matches, providing the firepower behind Edo Queens’ impressive campaign. The victory moved Moses Aduku’s side a step closer to reclaiming the NWFL Premiership title they last won two seasons ago.
In the day’s other major fixture, Bayelsa Queens kept their title defence firmly on track with a convincing 2-0 win over FC Robo Queens.
The defending champions made the perfect start and needed less than a minute to open the scoring. Kindness Ifeanyi found the back of the net inside the opening minute to hand Bayelsa Queens an early advantage. The goal was her seventh league strike of the season and immediately put FC Robo Queens under pressure.
Despite their efforts, FC Robo Queens struggled to create a way back into the match. Bayelsa Queens controlled large spells of the game and eventually wrapped up all three points in the 83rd minute.
Substitute Ojiyovwi Kesiena made an instant impact after entering the game. With her first touch of the match, she calmly finished to double Bayelsa Queens’ lead and secure a vital 2-0 victory.
The result ensured that Bayelsa Queens remained firmly in the hunt for another league title heading into the final round of matches.
Meanwhile, Abia Angels and Nasarawa Amazons shared the spoils in a tense goalless encounter.
Nasarawa Amazons created the better opportunities throughout the contest but failed to convert their chances when it mattered most. Their best opportunity arrived deep into stoppage time when they were awarded a penalty.
Adaobi Okah stepped forward in the 90+2nd minute with the chance to secure all three points. However, her effort crashed against the crossbar, allowing Abia Angels to escape with a valuable point and denying Nasarawa Amazons a crucial victory.
The draw marked a disappointing result for coach Christopher Danjuma’s side, who have now gone two consecutive matches without a win after beginning the Super Six campaign with back to back victories.
With one round of fixtures remaining, Edo Queens lead the NWFL Premiership Super Six standings with nine points. Bayelsa Queens move into second place on goal difference, while Nasarawa Amazons sit third with the two sides level on seven points. Abia Angels remain fourth on four points, while Rivers Angels and FC Robo Queens occupy fifth and sixth positions respectively.
Attention now turns to the decisive final day on Sunday, June 14. Nasarawa Amazons must defeat Rivers Angels and hope other results favour them in the title race. Abia Angels will face FC Robo Queens, while all eyes will be on the heavyweight showdown between Bayelsa Queens and Edo Queens.
That final fixture will determine the 2025/2026 NWFL Premiership champions and bring an end to what has been a fiercely contested Super Six campaign.
