Chibuike Nwaiwu needed less than 24 hours to go from a late call-up to making his debut for Nigeria national football team (Super Eagles), playing his part in a 2-1 international friendly victory over Iran national football team.
Thrown into the action in the 57th minute after an injury to Igoh Ogbu, the Trabzonspor defender settled quickly despite the circumstances. Iran reduced the deficit ten minutes later from a set piece, but Nwaiwu remained composed at the back, combining well with fellow debutant Emmanuel Fernandez to help Nigeria hold on for the win.
It was a remarkable turnaround for the 24-year-old, who had only just joined the squad as a replacement for the injured Calvin Bassey. Despite barely having time to train with his new teammates, he delivered a calm and assured performance when called upon.
Speaking after the match, Chibuike Nwaiwu struggled to hide his emotions following a dream debut for his country. “I think it’s a privilege for me to represent my country because all footballers in the world, their dream is to represent their country. I’m very happy to be here to represent my country and I’m very happy to make my first debut today.”
Reflecting on the game itself, he acknowledged the quality of the opposition (Iran) while praising Nigeria’s efficiency on the night. “They are a very good side. I think every year they come to the World Cup. I think we take our chances and I think we make a great job.”
The former Heartland and Enyimba defender also spoke about the journey that led him to this moment, from his early days in the Nigeria Premier Football League to achieving his long-held ambition of wearing the national colours.
“I believe in God and I believe hard work pays off.” He further revealed how he always believed his opportunity would come. “Right from the time I play NPFL, I always say I will wear the national team shirt. I want to represent my country and when I get the text in my club, I was very, very happy and excited and I’m very happy to be here to wear the shirt. I was very, very excited and because of the excitement, I nearly missed my flight.”
Nwaiwu’s rapid rise from late replacement to international debutant capped an impressive introduction to the Super Eagles setup, and his performance will give the coaching crew added confidence as they prepare for their next friendly.
