Organisers of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games have announced that the iconic OVO Hydro will host the Opening Ceremony, while also launching a major recruitment drive for 700 volunteer cast members to take part in the spectacle.

Scheduled for July 23, the ceremony will break new ground as the first in Commonwealth Games history to be staged in an indoor arena. The innovative approach is expected to deliver a more immersive and high-energy experience, bringing fans closer to the action as the Games get underway.
The production will celebrate Glasgow’s identity, with its storytelling rooted in the city’s culture and heritage. A team of renowned creatives has been assembled, including show and staging director Roxana Cole, choreographer Emily Jane Boyle, and costume designer Carole Millar, under the leadership of Ceremonies Chief Louisa Mahon.
As part of preparations, organisers are inviting volunteers from diverse backgrounds to participate in the ceremony. Roles will range from dance and theatre performances to musical acts, athlete welcoming duties, and storytelling segments. No prior experience is required, with enthusiasm and passion highlighted as key qualities. Applicants must, however, be at least 16 years old.
The OVO Hydro, located within the Scottish Event Campus, is one of four major venues for the Games and has previously hosted global entertainment stars. It will also stage the netball competition, featuring 12 top teams from across the Commonwealth.
Speaking on the development, Louisa Mahon described the ceremony as bold and uniquely reflective of Glasgow, noting that the arena setting would create a more engaging experience for both live audiences and global viewers.
Chief Executive of the Scottish Event Campus, Dominic McKay, expressed pride in the venue’s central role, adding that preparations are underway to deliver a memorable opening that will captivate millions worldwide.
The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games will run from July 23 to August 2, bringing together over 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories to compete across 10 sports and six Para sports in what promises to be a vibrant and dynamic celebration of sport.
