Ekene Awazie has expressed strong belief that Enyimba F.C. will recover from their difficult run in the Nigeria Premier Football League before the season ends.

The People’s Elephant have struggled for consistency this campaign. After 28 matches, the two time African champions have managed eight wins and nine draws, while suffering 11 defeats. Their poor form has left them in 15th position on the table, just one point above the relegation zone.

Enyimba have won only one of their last nine league matches, a narrow 1 to 0 victory over Bayelsa United F.C. in Aba on 1 February. Their latest result was a 1 to 1 draw at home against league newcomers Kun Khalifat F.C., a game in which Awazie scored the equaliser.

Reacting after the match, the 29 year old forward admitted the team was frustrated with the outcome but insisted that Enyimba have the character to overcome difficult moments.

“It was not the result we wanted, but we’ll keep working hard to get what we want,” he said.

“We are disappointed, and we also disappointed the fans because this should have been the time to start coming up and start getting our points at home, but we’ll still keep pushing to get the results we want.

“We missed our chances in the first half when we were supposed to wrap up the game, but the second half was so difficult. And coming back from a goal down was difficult against a team that just wants to defend and not attack.”

When asked if the record nine time Nigerian champions can turn things around, Awazie remained optimistic.

“Yeah, sure! That’s what they know Enyimba for. We never say die, we keep fighting.

“It’s just the mindset. If we put our minds together that we are going to get there, we’ll get there. We’ll get the points. It’s just the beginning; we’ll start getting it right.”
