Trabzonspor have confirmed that defender Chibuike Nwaiwu has suffered a thigh injury following their 3-1 league win over Fatih Karagümrük at Papara Park last Friday.
Nwaiwu picked up the injury during the match and was later taken off despite delivering a standout performance in which he scored twice. He was replaced by Mathias Løvik with 17 minutes left to play.
In an official statement, the club revealed that medical examinations and an MRI scan showed bleeding and swelling in the inner thigh muscle of his left leg. The club’s medical team has already begun treatment, but no clear timeline has been given for his return.
The young centre back only joined Trabzonspor in January from Austrian side Wolfsberger AC and has quickly become a regular figure in the squad. He has made six league appearances and featured in nine consecutive matches since his arrival, showing strong form at the heart of defence.
His fellow Nigerian teammate Paul Onuachu also impressed in the same game, scoring one goal and providing an assist to help secure the victory.
The injury now casts doubt over Chibuike Nwaiwu availability for Nigeria’s unsettled upcoming international friendlies in March, as his recovery will determine whether he can be considered for selection.
