Rivers United chief coach Yemi Olanrewaju has expressed strong confidence in Chibuike Nwaiwu, saying the Trabzonspor defender has what it takes to build a solid partnership with Benjamin Fredrick and Calvin Bassey in the Super Eagles backline.

Olanrewaju shared his thoughts with Footy Africa after Nwaiwu delivered an impressive performance for Trabzonspor in their league win over Fatih Karagümrük, where the Nigerian defender got on the scoresheet. The coach said he is not surprised by the level Nwaiwu has reached and praised his steady development in Turkey.

According to Olanrewaju, Nwaiwu possesses the key qualities required to succeed at the highest level. He described him as fast, intelligent, physically strong and fully committed. He added that the defender reads the game very well and has improved significantly, making him one of the most promising young Nigerian centre backs at the moment.

He explained that Nwaiwu’s pace is a major advantage, especially in modern football where defenders are expected to be quick and sharp in their decision making. Olanrewaju believes that pairing Nwaiwu with Fredrick and Bassey would give Nigeria a strong and youthful defensive unit for years to come. In his view, such a combination could secure the Super Eagles defence for the next five years because of their speed, strength and understanding of the game.

Nigeria are scheduled to play international friendlies against Jordan national football team and Iran national football team during the March FIFA window, and Nwaiwu is reportedly among the players being considered for selection.

In the same league match, Paul Onuachu scored and provided an assist as Trabzonspor claimed a 3 to 1 victory. Chibuike Nwaiwu also registered his first goals in Turkish football, underlining his growing influence at the club.
