Former Kaizer Chiefs FC striker Brian Abbas Amidu has been sentenced to 12 years in prison in Zimbabwe after being convicted on drug related charges, Trybal News reports.
Amidu, who joined the Soweto giants during the 2012/2013 season, was arrested in October 2025 alongside former Dynamos player Reuben Kudzai Mhlanga. The pair were detained by the Zimbabwe Republic Police and later charged in Kwekwe for possession of 750kg of cannabis with an estimated street value of R1.2 million.
According to ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the two men appeared in court for sentencing on February 24, 2026.
“Abbas Amidu” Matsika and Reuben Kudzai Mhlanga, appeared for sentencing on February 24, 2026. Both were handed 12 year jail terms,” Nyathi said.
“The ZRP applauds members of the public for their continued cooperation and support in the fight against crime,” Nyathi stated, reiterating that “crime does not pay.”
During court proceedings, Amidu was identified as Tumai “Abbas Amidu” Matsika and listed as 29 years old. However, football records show his birth year as 1990, which would make him 35 at the time of sentencing.
Amidu began his professional career in Zimbabwe with Black Mambas, where he scored 12 goals before securing a move to Kaizer Chiefs in 2012. Fitness issues prevented him from making a competitive appearance for the club.
In 2015, he moved to Limpopo to join Black Leopards FC, where he scored four goals in more than 20 appearances. Over the course of his career, he also had spells abroad with El Entag El Harby in Egypt, Arar FC in Saudi Arabia and clubs in the United Arab Emirates.
