Nigeria has been confirmed among the nations that will compete in the men’s 3×3 basketball event at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, marking a significant step for the country in one of the fastest-growing formats of the sport.
The competition will take place at the SEC Centre from July 24 to July 29, 2026, featuring the fast-paced half-court version of basketball known for its speed, skill, and electrifying atmosphere. Played with three athletes per team on a single hoop and a 12-second shot clock, games last just 10 minutes or end once a side reaches 21 points.
Nigeria will make its debut in the men’s draw alongside fellow first-time participants Guyana and Malaysia, as the tournament expands from eight teams per gender at Birmingham 2022 to 12 in Glasgow, highlighting the sport’s growing global appeal.
The men’s competition will feature Australia, Cayman Islands, Fiji, Guyana, Jamaica, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Scotland, Singapore, and one European nation yet to be confirmed, with host Scotland earning automatic qualification.
Commonwealth Sport Director Ann-Louise Morgan emphasized the rise of the format, stating that “3×3 Basketball has become one of the most exciting formats in global sport, ”adding that the expanded competition “underlines just how far it has come.”
The draw and match schedule are expected to be released later this year as Nigeria prepares to test itself against top Commonwealth nations in a discipline rapidly gaining prominence on the international stage.
