Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman is edging closer to a move to Atletico Madrid after reportedly giving his approval to the Spanish club amid intense transfer interest. The Atalanta winger has emerged as Diego Simeone’s top attacking target, with negotiations accelerating in recent days.

Atletico’s pursuit of the Nigerian star comes after Giacomo Raspadori headed in the opposite direction earlier in the transfer window, leaving the Madrid side searching for reinforcements in attack. Lookman had long been monitored by the club, but their push became more aggressive this week as they moved to secure his signature.

Fenerbahce were initially in a strong position to land the 2024 African Player of the Year after progressing in talks with Atalanta, but Atletico have now surged ahead in the race. Reports indicate that Los Colchoneros are prepared to pay €35 million plus an additional €5 million in performance-related bonuses, with only minor details left before the agreement is finalised.

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano also revealed that Lookman has informed all parties of his intention to prioritise Atletico Madrid despite receiving an improved salary proposal from the Turkish side. A verbal agreement worth around €40 million is believed to be in place, with formalities expected to follow shortly.

The potential arrival of Lookman would provide a timely boost for Simeone, whose attacking options have been stretched in recent weeks due to squad changes and fitness concerns. The Nigerian international is now on the brink of a significant career step, with the coming hours expected to determine whether the move to the RiyadhAir Metropolitano is completed.
