Manchester City have completed the signing of Ghanaian wonder Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth, moving swiftly to reinforce their attacking options as they push for success in both the Premier League and the Champions League.
Semenyo becomes City’s first signing of the January transfer window after a standout season in English football, where his form has marked him out as one of the league’s most dangerous attackers. The 26-year-old arrives in a deal reportedly worth £65 million and has signed a long-term contract that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until the end of the 2031 season.
The Ghana international has been in outstanding form this campaign, scoring 10 league goals and providing three assists, making him the third-highest goalscorer in the Premier League so far. Comfortable operating on either flank, Semenyo adds pace, power and directness to Pep Guardiola’s forward line.
“I have watched City over the last decade under Pep Guardiola, and they have been the dominant team in the Premier League as well as achieving amazing things in the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup,” Semenyo said in a statement.
“They have set the highest of standards and it’s a club with world-class players, world-class facilities and one of the greatest managers ever in Pep.
“I have so much scope for improvement, so to be at this club, at this stage of my career, is perfect for me. It’s a real privilege to be here. My best football is yet to come, I am sure of that.”
Semenyo will now compete for places in a City squad that already boasts wide attacking options such as Jeremy Doku, Savinho, Oscar Bobb and Omar Marmoush. Doku remains a key figure, while Savinho and Bobb are currently sidelined through injury, and Marmoush has struggled for consistent game time this season and is away on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Before his move to Manchester, Semenyo had attracted strong interest from other Premier League heavyweights including Manchester United and Liverpool. He joined Bournemouth from Bristol City and spent two and a half seasons on the south coast, steadily developing into one of the most effective forwards in the division.
The transfer marks a major step in Semenyo’s career and underlines Manchester City’s intent to stay ahead of their domestic and European rivals as the season enters a decisive phase.
