Democratic Republic of Congo began their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a hard fought 1-0 victory over Benin Republic as Theo Bongonda’s early goal proved decisive at the Al Medina Stadium in Rabat.

Fresh from reaching the semi finals of the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, the Leopards arrived in Morocco full of confidence after an impressive run of form in 2025 that saw them win five of their last six matches, including strong performances in the World Cup qualifying series. Benin Republic, back at the AFCON finals for the first time since their memorable quarter final appearance in 2019, were hoping to make a statement despite having less tournament experience than their opponents.

DR Congo made their early dominance count in the 16th minute. Arthur Masuaku launched a long ball forward that found Theo Bongonda in space. The winger went one on one with goalkeeper Marcel Dandjinou Allagbe and calmly placed his shot into the left corner to give the Leopards the lead.

The opening half struggled to find rhythm overall, but Congo’s early pressure was enough to separate the sides. Benin gradually grew into the game and ended the half on the front foot, though they were unable to break down a disciplined Congolese defence.

Early in the second half, DR Congo thought they had doubled their advantage when Cédric Bakambu powered home a header in the 47th minute. However, the goal was ruled out following a VAR review, keeping Benin firmly in contention.

Despite creating several chances, the Leopards failed to extend their lead, a lapse that almost proved costly as Benin pushed forward late on in search of an equaliser. Congo held their nerve to see out the contest and secure all three points.

The match marked DR Congo’s 81st appearance at the AFCON finals and the third competitive meeting between the two nations. Their previous encounters came during the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, with a 1-1 draw in Benin in September 2021 followed by a 2-0 home win for DR Congo two months later.

For Benin Republic, this defeat extends their unwanted record at the tournament, as they remain without a win in their opening group matches at AFCON. It was also their fifth appearance at the finals, with the search for a first ever AFCON victory in regular time continuing.

DR Congo will next face Senegal on December 27, while Benin Republic turn their attention to a crucial group fixture against Botswana.
