The Super Eagles of Nigeria have officially released their squad numbers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with a strong blend of experienced stars and new faces set to represent the country at the continental tournament.
The list features several first-time AFCON players, underlining the team’s gradual transition and investment in emerging talent. Among the new inclusions is Ebenezer Akinsanmiro (26), a promising midfielder who has impressed at club level and earns his first major tournament call-up. Ryan Alebiosu (27), a versatile defender, is also set to experience AFCON football for the first time, while Salim Fago Lawal (25) and Tochukwu Nnadi (28) add youthful energy to the midfield and defensive units respectively.
Another notable inclusion is Akor Adams (22), whose physical presence and goal threat earned him a place in the final squad, as well as Igho Ogbu (5), who has been rewarded for consistent performances in defence. These players represent a new generation expected to gradually take over from the established core of the team.
Beyond the new faces, several jersey numbers carry deep historical significance in Nigerian football. Victor Osimhen retains the iconic number 9 shirt, a jersey famously worn by Super Eagles legends such as Rashidi Yekini, Nigeria’s all-time leading goalscorer, as well as Obafemi Martins and Odion Ighalo. Osimhen’s continued use of the number further cements his status as the team’s main attacking reference.
Ademola Lookman wears the prestigious number 7 jersey, a shirt associated with flair and wing play, previously donned by Nigerian greats like Segun Odegbami, Finidi George, and former captain Ahmed Musa. Lookman will be expected to live up to that tradition with his pace and creativity.
One of the most talked-about assignments is the number 10 shirt, now worn by Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. The number 10 is one of the most revered jerseys in Super Eagles history, previously worn by iconic playmakers such as Muda Lawal, Etim Esin, Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, and former captain John Obi Mikel. Handing the number to Dele-Bashiru signals confidence in his creative influence.
Team captain Wilfred Ndidi wears number 4, a jersey that symbolises leadership and defensive stability, while first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali continues with number 23, a shirt he has made his own with consistent performances since the last AFCON.
