Norwegian club Molde FK have suspended Nigerian midfielder Daniel Daga after confirming that the 18-year-old has been charged in Norway in connection with an alleged sexual assault.
Daga has been withdrawn from all training sessions and matchday activities as legal proceedings continue. The club disclosed that the midfielder has fully cooperated with the police, attending all interrogations since the investigation began.
After the conclusion of the Norwegian season, Daga returned to Nigeria during the club’s scheduled break. However, Molde confirmed that an agreement has been reached for him to return to Norway ahead of court proceedings expected to take place in March 2026 at the Nordmøre and Romsdal District Court.
Daga is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s promising young midfielders, having represented the country at youth level. He featured prominently for the Flying Eagles at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup, where he was one of the youngest players in the squad and played a key role as Nigeria reached the quarter-finals. His performances at the tournament further established his reputation as a composed and energetic presence in midfield.
Reacting to the development, Molde chairman Odd Ivar Moen described the situation as a serious and sensitive matter, noting the emotional strain such cases place on everyone involved. He added that the club has been in contact with the complainant’s legal representatives as part of efforts to act responsibly and respectfully throughout the process.
Daga’s legal team has denied any wrongdoing. His lawyer, Astrid Bolstad, said the player acknowledges that a sexual encounter occurred but insists it was consensual. She stressed that her client does not admit guilt and that there are no allegations of violence or threats, adding that the midfielder is keen to clear his name in court.
Daga joined Molde ahead of the 2025 season and made 16 appearances across all competitions during his debut campaign in Norwegian football.
Molde concluded by reiterating its commitment to allowing the legal process to take its full course, while ensuring fairness, respect and dignity for all parties involved.
