Super Falcons defender Tosin Demehin has completed her move to Portuguese champions Benfica, marking another major step in her growing European career.
The 24 year old centre back joins the six time Portuguese champions after leaving Turkish giants Galatasaray.
Demehin has signed a three year contract with Benfica. She now begins a new chapter with one of Europe’s most established women’s football clubs.
The Nigeria international expressed her excitement about the transfer. She also believes Benfica will give her the right platform to continue improving at the highest level.
“Benfica is the best club in Portugal and one of the best clubs in the world. Therefore, I know that being here, I can improve my performance,” Demehin told BTV.
Demehin sought Ucheibe’s advice before Benfica move
Before completing the transfer, Demehin spoke with Super Falcons teammate Christy Ucheibe about life at Benfica.
Ucheibe previously represented the Portuguese club. Her experience helped Demehin gain a better understanding of the club before making her decision.
“Before coming here, I spoke with her during the national team training camp. She told me many nice things about the club,” she added.
Demehin also explained the qualities she believes define her as a defender. She pointed to her work ethic, discipline and determination as three key strengths.
“I would describe myself as hardworking, disciplined and determined,” the defender said.
Her move to Benfica continues a steady rise that began in the Nigerian domestic league.
Demehin started her senior career with Sunshine Queens before joining Rivers Angels. Her performances for the Port Harcourt club soon attracted attention from European clubs.
In 2022, she moved to France to join Stade de Reims. The transfer marked her first experience of European football and gave her an opportunity to develop at a higher level.
Two years later, Demehin moved to Turkey and joined Galatasaray in 2024. She spent the next phase of her career with the Turkish giants before deciding to take on a new challenge in Portugal.
Now at Benfica, Demehin will look to build on her experience in France and Turkey while competing at the highest level of European women’s football.
Her arrival also strengthens Benfica’s defensive options as the club continues to compete for domestic honours and establish itself among Europe’s leading women’s teams.
For the Super Falcons defender, the move represents both a fresh challenge and an opportunity to take another significant step in her development.
