Arthur Okonkwo made an impressive Charlton Athletic debut as the Addicks secured a 2–1 victory over West Ham United at the London Stadium, Trybal News reports.

The Nigeria international was handed his first start just two days after completing a season-long loan move from Wrexham, and he repaid manager Nathan Jones’ faith with a commanding display between the posts.

Charlton made a fast start to the game and took the lead through Lloyd Jones in the seventh minute, before Tyreece Campbell doubled the visitors’ advantage in the 56th minute.

West Ham responded through Joel Piroe, who pulled one back in the 74th minute, setting up a tense final period as the hosts pushed for an equaliser.

Okonkwo proved crucial as West Ham increased the pressure, making eight saves throughout the match. The goalkeeper produced several important interventions, including a one-handed stop to deny Piroe and a strong save to keep out substitute Divine Mukasa.

West Ham were handed a huge opportunity to rescue a point in stoppage time when they were awarded a penalty, but Taty Castellanos struck the post, allowing Charlton to hold on for a memorable away victory.

The result maintains Charlton’s perfect start to the Championship season, with the Addicks winning their opening two league matches.

Okonkwo finished his Charlton debut with eight saves, 44 touches and 27 passes, of which 14 were accurate, underlining his contribution both between the posts and in Charlton’s build-up play.

Jones praises Okonkwo

Charlton manager Nathan Jones was full of praise for his new goalkeeper after the match.

Arthur Okonkwo was outstanding. It’s wonderful to work with him. He has shown real desire to join the football club.”

Jones had also revealed that Okonkwo caught his attention during his time at Wrexham, including a performance against Charlton last season in which he produced two outstanding saves.

That faith was rewarded on Saturday, as Okonkwo immediately demonstrated his shot-stopping ability and composure under pressure.

The goalkeeper joined Charlton after making 121 appearances for Wrexham, playing an important role in the club’s rise through the English football pyramid.

For Okonkwo, it was an ideal start to his Charlton career, eight saves, a clean sheet for most of the game, a victory over West Ham and three points for the Addicks.
