The 3rd National Para Games will officially open on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, with a high-profile opening ceremony that will see top government and sports officials lead the proceedings. Presidential spokesperson Sunday Dare, NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko, and NSC Director General Bukola Olopade are all expected to be present to formally declare the Games open, signalling the start of Nigeria’s flagship para-sport event.

Held from March 26 to April 3, the 3rd National Para Games bring together over 3,000 athletes from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, competing across 15 sports. Competitions will include para athletics, wheelchair basketball, para swimming, amputee football, sitting volleyball, para powerlifting, and wheelchair tennis, among others. The sheer scale of the event makes it one of the largest gatherings of para-athletes in the nation’s history.

The presence of top dignitaries at the opening ceremony reflects the Federal Government’s strong commitment to para sports and the empowerment of athletes. Their participation is expected to inspire both the competitors and spectators, while sending a powerful message about inclusivity, opportunity, and national pride.

Organized by the National Sports Commission, the Games have become a critical platform for discovering talent, fostering unity, and preparing athletes for international competitions such as the Paralympic Games, African championships, and the Commonwealth Games. Beyond the competitive aspect, the Games celebrate the extraordinary abilities of athletes living with disabilities, while promoting social inclusion and equality across the country.

The opening ceremony will showcase not only the pageantry of Nigeria’s sporting culture but also the determination, courage, and resilience of para-athletes. It is expected to feature a range of formal and cultural presentations, highlighting the significance of the Games both as a sporting and social event.

As Abuja gears up to host the week-long spectacle, attention will be on the ceremonial flag-off led by Dare, Dikko, and Olopade, setting the tone for a competition that promises to celebrate excellence, inspire future athletes, and reaffirm Nigeria’s commitment to the growth of para sports nationwide.
