With just two days to the commencement of the second Niger Delta Games in Benin City, the Edo State Sports Commission has encouraged Team Edo athletes to remain strong and fearless, urging them to “be bold like lions and soar like eagles” as the competition approaches.

The charge came on Wednesday evening when the Commission’s management team paid a routine visit to the GRA camp of Team Edo to assess preparations and boost the morale of athletes and coaches ahead of the Games.

During the visit, management expressed deep appreciation to the coaches and athletes for their patience, perseverance, and sacrifices since leaving their families to move into camp for final preparations.

“We are here to appreciate you and to admonish you as we are close to the commencement of the Games. We want to say thank you for your patience, perseverance, and your sacrifices since you came into this camp for the final preparations for the second Niger Delta Games. We have confidence in you and believe in your ability to deliver for your dear state, and we are here to let you know that we care about you. The Niger Delta Games will kick off in two days’ time, and you should remember that we are the host, you are representing yourselves, your families, and your state.

“As you prepare ahead of the Games, remember that discipline is our watchword. When you work hard and aim higher, discipline should be added, as that is the sure way to victory and success. Being ambassadors of the host state, you must conduct yourselves in an orderly manner throughout, abide by the rules of the Games, and respect your coaches’ decisions. If you have any issues or complaints, discuss them with your coaches and top officials, and we shall respond.

“Be strong and bold like lions, soar like eagles, and go for gold as good ambassadors of Edo State. Thank you for all that you have done, there is a reward for all of us.”

No fewer than about 3,000 athletes and officials from nine oil-producing states are expected to participate in the multi-sport event, which will feature 17 sports and showcase emerging talents from across the region.
